Bovine Mastitis Flashcards
What is the most common form?
Sub clinical mastitis
What is subclinical mastitis
Infection does not result in physical abnormalities of the milk or the cow. Milk production is reduced and milk composition is altered
What is clinical mastitis
You see visible changes in the milk, the teat, or systemically in the cow
How do you detect subclinical mastitis
SCC
California mastitis test
Electrical conductivity
What SCC detects inflammation? What SCC means infection?
> 100,000
200,000
What grade on the CMT means SCC <200,000
Grade 0
What changes can you see in electrical conductivity if a cow has mastitis?
Na and Cl will increase
K will decrease
What signs do you see with mild clinical mastitis?
Visible abnormal changes to the milk
What signs do you see with moderate clinical mastitis?
Milk is visibly abnormal
The gland is visibly abnormal
Milk production decreased
What signs do you see with severe clinical mastitis?
Visible abnormal changes to milk
Visible abnormal changes to the gland
Systemically ill cow
What are the contagious mastitis pathogens? Which ones are the major pathogens?
Strep agalactiae (major)
Staph aureus (major)
Corynebacterium bovis
Mycoplasma
Which pathogens can be treated intramammary?
Strep agalactiae
Corynebacterium bovis
What treatment do you use for Mycoplasma and staph aureus?
They are usually culled
What are the environmental mastitis pathogens
Coliforms
Other strep organisms
