Exercise Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage Flashcards
What type of horses does it affect?
Racehorses - thoroughbreds, Standardbreds, quarter horse
Can affect any horse with strenuous exercise
What type of exercise causes this
Strenuous exercise (like a sprint)
Pathogenesis?
Unknown - there are many theories - ruptured capillaries, upper airway obstruction, coagulopathies, etc etc
Most obvious clinical sign? Other CS?
Epistaxis, but you do not see it in all horses
Other - labored breathing, decreased performance, loss of speed, coughing
Treatment? When is it given?
Furosemide, 4 hours PRIOR to exercise
Is prevalence related to intensity or duration?
Intensity
Which part of the lungs are most commonly involved
Caudodorsal lung fields (think of a dog in CHF - you treat with furosemide b/c fluid in caudodorsal lung field. You treat this with furosemide too)
Besides epistaxis, how else can you try to diagnose the disease?
Endoscopy and cytology (BAL)
