Hepatobiliary Disease Of The Horse Flashcards
Prognosis for acute serum hepatitis
Guarded to poor
What is the most common cause of acute hepatitis and hepatic failure in horses
Acute serum hepatitis
Acute serum sickness is associated with administration of what type of medication?
Tetanus antitoxin
What are the hallmarks of PA toxicity in the liver
Fibrosis, megalocytosis, bile duct proliferation
Is theilers disease acute or chronic hepatitis
Acute
CS of acute serum hepatitis/theilers disease
Icterus, photosensitization, hepatoencephalopahty
Others: pica, anorexia, depression, etc
What microscopic changes do you see with acute serum hepatitis/theilers
Hepatic necrosis and inflammatory cell infiltrate with mononuclear cells and neutrophils in portal areas along with proliferation of bile ducts
Treatment of acute serum hepatitis
Non-specific supportive therapy
Chronic active hepatitis causes
Inflammatory response of the liver to an unknown stimulus
Chronic active hepatitis CS
Similar to other causes of liver disease, but more chronic
Progressive weight loss, icterus, photosensitization, etc
Diagnosis of chronic active hepatitis
Varying degrees of fibrosis in portal areas
Hepatocytes may appear normal
Treatment of chronic active hepatitis
Steroids, supportive care, fluids, abx if suspect bacterial cause
Cause of PA toxicity
Consumption of plants with PA
Senecia, Croats aria, heliotropium
What is megalocytosis
Large liver cells as a result of not being able to divide due to the PA toxin
CS of PA toxicity
Non-specific liver signs, icterus, photosensitization
