Habronemiasis Flashcards
What is habronemasis
Parasitic disease that results from aberrant cutaneous migration of nematode larvae.
What does this cause in the horse? Aka how do you describe the lesions?
Cutaneous ulcerative granulomas
What is the intermediate host?
Flies - Musca domestica, stomoxys calcitrans
What causes habronomiasis
3 nematodes: habronema muscae, habronema majus, draschia megastoma
Prevention?
Regular deworming (ivermectin) Good fly control
Where do adult nematodes live?
Stomach of horse
Common name for habronomiasis
Summer sores
Is this disease pruritic?
Can be very pruritic in some horses due to hypersensitivity reaction
Where do lesions normally develop?
Moist areas - medial canthus, vulva, teats, wounds, nostrils, lip commissure
Treatment?
Lesions resolve by end of summer
Topical therapy with ivermectin/glucocorticoid
Systemic anti-histamines or glucocorticoid may be necessary
Diagnosis?
Deep skin scrape or smear from lesion may show nematode.
Can see them on biopsy
