Infection & Response- Prevention & Treatment Flashcards
Vaccines contain ____ or ________ pathogens.
Vaccines contain dead or weakened pathogens.
___________ prevents _______by causing a more _____ ______ ________ to pathogens.
Vaccination prevents illness by causing a more rapid immune response to pathogens.
_____________ of pathogens can be ________ by __________ a large proportion of the
population.
Transmission of pathogens can be reduced by immunising a large proportion of the
population.
Painkillers can be used to treat the _________ of illness but do not ____ _________.
Painkillers can be used to treat the symptoms of illness but do not kill pathogens.
Antibiotics kill ________.
Antibiotics kill bacteria.
what is immunisation?
immunisation is what happens in your body after you have a vaccination
why does the vaccine stimulate your immune system?
so that it can ‘recognise’ the disease and quickly produce antibodies if you become infected.
what is active immunity?
once an antibody has been made, our bodies store a copy of it so that if the same pathogen invades again, our body can make the antibody very quickly.
what is passive immunity?
this is when our bodies cannot make antibodies in time and so doctors can inject antibodies that have been made by somebody else
why do the antibodies injected doing passive immunity not last very long?
they don’t last long as our own bodies do not know how to make them
what are antibiotics?
antibiotics are chemicals used to treat BACTERIAL infections. These chemicals kill or stop the growth of bacteria.
what is antibiotic resistance?
when the bacteria are no longer affected by certain antibiotics.
what happens to the resistant bacteria when trying to treat the infection?
the resistant bacteria will survive and reproduce, and the population of the resistant strain will increase.
what can doctors do to try and decrease the rate of of development of resistant strains.
avoid over-prescribing antibiotics meaning you will only get them for a more serious illnesses and infections.
what is a bacteriophage?
a bacteriophage is a virus that naturally infects bacteria, but which is harmless to humans.
