Infection Control and Disease.2 Flashcards
What are the 4 different pathogen groups and give 1 example for each?
Fungi- ringworm
Bacteria- leptospirosis
Virus- canine distemper
Protozoa- toxoplasmosis
What are common diseases that can be vaccinated against?
canine distemper
leptospirosis
kennel cough
parvovirus
List 4 factors that affect disease transmission
micro-organism- what type
reservior
mode of transmission
susceptible hosts
What life-stage is most at risk of disease/ infection?
geriatric- weakened immune system
neonates- immologically incompetent, dependent on dam
What is a human reservoir?
human to human disease transmission
What is an animal reservoir?
transmitted from animal to animal- zoonosis (natural conditions)
What is an environmental reservior?
located within plants, soils, water- transmitted to humans and animals
How can campylobacter be transmitted?
through faeces- indirect
Give an example of a disease transmitted through blood.
Feline Leukemia Virus- virus
Give an example of a disease transmitted through skin/hair
Ringworm- fungi
Give an example of a disease transmitted through nasal discharge
Canine Distemper- virus
Give an example of a disease transmitted through milk
Leptospirosis
What is a carrier?
person/ animal transmits infection, shedding intervals, minimal signs of disease
What is convalenscing?
returns to normal health, continued shedding of infective agent onto environment- increases when stressed
What is a healthy carrier?
asymptomatic, may still shed into environment/ immune
What is a closed carrier?
never sheds any micro-organisms- carries disease
What is an open carrier?
actively spreads disease/infection to other animals or humans
