Infection Control and Disease Flashcards
What are the methods of controlling infection/ disease?
hand hygiene, isolation, barrier nursing, sterilisation etc
What are the hygiene precautions?
WHO handwash, PPE, storage/ handling and prep of food
efficient cleaning, barriers
control vectors
education
Ways to reduce disease risk?
kennel overcrowding
ventilation
minimal stress
control fleas/ external vectors
routine vaccinations
What things are important to educate clients?
disease risk factors, hygiene, good husbandry
Zoonotic protocols?
not allowing human licking- children susceptible
equipment separate from humans
avoid infection exposure
pregnant/ immocompromised- vigilant
medical advice
tetanus immunisation advised for staff
Nosocominal Infections-
practice acquired infection/ developed
Why can are nosocomial infections concerning for inpatients
poor hygeine/ transfer systems
antimicrobial resistance
increased exposure risk/ secondary infections
Examples of Nosocomial infections-
UTIS- repeated catherisation
wound infection- post op
antibiotic resistant mircrobes- D+
Good Wound Management methods?
sterile PPE
sterile instruments/ equipment
sterle bandages
regular dressing changes/ soiled-wet
prevent self trauma
List methods of Antibiotic Resistance-
only when strictly necessary
never used as good substitute patient care/ control methods
swab- culture/ sensitivity testing
What are ways to prevent self-trauma?
buster collars
analgesia
pet suits
What is reverse barrier nursing?
protecting vulnerable patient rather than sick
Define Isolation.
physical segregation of animals suspected/having proved transmissible infectious disease
What are the steps when cleaning isolation?
Remove animal
Put on PPE- open windows and cover in disinfectant
Remove portable objects- sterilise/ soak in disinfectant for 12hours- rinse and repeat. Bedding should be boil washed after soaked- Bin what can be!!!
Remove gross soiling with equipment, place in infectious/ hazardous bin- sterilise/ soak disinfectant for 12hours- rinse and repeat
Sweep hair
Scrub out with detergent
Rinse with water
Apply disinfectant
Allow contact time 12hrs x 2- follow guide
Rinse
Dry
Leave to air
Remove waste bags from bin/ incinerate waste
Remake/ restock area
What are the some diseases that can be vaccinated against?

parvovirus
canine infectious hepatitis
leptospirosis
bordatella bonchiseptica
feline upper respiratory tract
feline leukaemia
myxomatosus virus
viral haemorrahagic disease
