Define first aid
the immediate treatment of injured animals of those suffering from sudden illness
What are the aims of first aid?
preserve life
prevent worsening of the condition
prevent suffering
What is the difference between first aid and treatment?
first aid is the provision, stabilising condition NOT diagnosing or administration of emergency treatment
Define emergency
any condition where the owner perceives that urgent veterinary attention is required
What is the relevant legislation regarding first aid and emergencies?
the animal welfare act (2006)
the veterinary surgeons act (1966)
What considerations increase the success rate when dealing with emergencies?
good communication
diligent monitoring
early recognition- prevents worsening
appropriate treatment
What are the types of emergencies?
life threatening
requires urgent attention
minor
Define triage
process of prioritising patients based on the severity of their condition
Life threatening
requires first aid to maintain life, rapid response vital
E.G: posioning, unconciousness, CR arrest, severe RTAs
Requires Urgent Attention
unlikely to cease life soon (mins/hours), progressive life-threatening unless treated- required immediate attention
E.G: dyspnoea, fractures, dystocia
Minor
may need emergency treatment, evaluation delayed/ not life threatening- prioritised level of discomfort
E.G: lameness, stings/ bites, minor wounds
What is important when answering phone calls?
communication skills
calm owner
sympathetic
appropriate questioning
useful information- determines type of treatment
Why can it be difficult to gain an emergency severity through the phone?
the owner can be misleading
