3 parts of personality
1. ID - instinctive and primitive part of the brain, driven by the instant gratification of basic needs, first part to develop
- Superego - morality or conscious which tells us right thing to do and if we go against it we feel guilty
- Ego - rational and practical part, acts as a mediator between the ID and Superego and idea of reality principle is that actions have consequences and we want to satisfy demands of ID in a way morally acceptable by superego.

- Problems with superego

- ID dominant - when superego doesnt develop due to lack of or poor relationship between same sex parent - lack of guilt for actions
- Deviant superego - when child internalizes the moral codes of a deviant parent and this becomes their behavioral norms
- Overactive superego - result of excessive punishment in childhood and leads to individual craving punishment so will go out their way to commit crime
