  • social definition : deviant act which is harmful to an individual or wider society which is deemed by that society to be wary of punishment
  • legal definition - legal system defines this as the laws which determine what is a crime and the sanctions attached to this

actus reus - guilty act - wrongful deed which compromises the physical part of a crime

mens reus - guilty mind - need to be proven with a guilty mind while committing the conviction

norms - unspoken rules which govern behavior
values - what we think should happen - norms derived from these
moral codes - collection of norms and values and they form a code

types of deviance
admired behavior - out of ordinary but highly regarded
odd behavior - odd beliefs or opinions
bad behavior - what we think of as deviant - covers low level of criminality
