individual factors in prejudice Flashcards
authoritarian personality
Authoritarianism is a personality dimension that characterizes people who
tend to hold traditional and conventional values. Someone with an authoritarian personality may be more likely to consider groups as ‘us and them’ and be prejudice towards people of a different social or ethnic group. Adorno (1950) created his Fascism scale (F-Scale) and suggested that those who scored more highly were more likely to show various traits. This is caused by upbringing given by their parents. They are hostile to those they see as inferior, and are more likely to act on prejudicial beliefs about groups/individuals.
social dominance orientation
SDO is a measure of an individual’s preference for hierarchy within any social
system and the domination over lower-status groups. Those who believe in social hierarchy are more likely to be prejudice towards lower status individuals because they think these are real substantial divisions which should be adhered to. People who score low on this individual trait (social dominance) believe in
fairness and social equality and would therefore be less prejudiced towards others.
openness
Refers to your degree of curiosity and creativity.
conscientiousness
The tendency to be organized and dependable. High score = efficient and organized, a low score= easy going and careless.

agreeableness

neuroticism
