Immunology Flashcards
pathogen
an organism or virus that causes a disease
antigen
macromolecule that elicits an immune response; i.e. stimulates production of antibodies
antibody
a y-shaped protein produced by B-lymphocytes and binds to a specific antigen
active immunity
due to the production of antibodies by the organism itself
passive immunity
due to the acquisition of antibodies from another organism in which active immunity has been stimulated
components of blood
erythrocytes: red blood cells carry oxygen
leukocytes: white blood cells and immune system
platelets: used in clotting
phagocytic cells
neutrophils are the first white blood cells on site
memory cells
they launch a quicker attack on the same antigen next time
vaccinations
stimulate artificial active immunity
