Immigration Flashcards
What rule did we change in regard to foreign students graduating?
A new Graduate Route - international graduates will be able to stay in the UK for two years to find work.
Why is Labour’s immigration policy a threat to British security?
Labour don’t want to take back control of immigration. They don’t want to end freedom of movement. Instead, Labour want to remove immigration caps – meaning a Labour government would let anyone enter the country. Whether our economy needed them or not.
What will our immigration measures mean for the welfare system?
£1.3 billion more kept in the welfare system.
What will new immigrants need before they come here?
A job offer. There will be a small number of exceptions, i.e. high skilled scientists, entrepreneurs.
How long will migrants need to wait in order to claim benefits?
5 years. Prior to Brexit, EU migrants can access welfare and services being in the UK for 3 months.
What will we do about child benefit being sent abroad?
End it - something that the EU refused to grant in the 2016 negotiations. This will save us £800 million a year by 2024-25.
What will we do about the international health surcharge?
Raise it by £625 and extend it to all foreign workers to ensure they are making a sufficient contribution to our health service. Under the current system, people on a work, study or family visa incur average NHS costs of £625 per year but only pay a £400 surcharge. This measure will raise over £500m a year, which can be put towards NHS services.
What does our new immigration plan mean for criminals?
Serious criminals will not be allowed into the country as happens now under EU rules. Those committing crimes will not be permitted to remain in the UK.
What are we doing to strengthen our borders?
£20 million for new equipment to better detect illicit goods, such as firearms and drugs, and crack down on illegal immigration.
How will we attract leaders in their fields?
Actively recruiting them. A small number of the best technology and science graduates from the world’s top universities who win top scientific prizes will be offered fast-track entry into the UK.
What will the new immigration system prioritise?
Have a good grasp of English
Been a law-abiding citizen in their own country
Have good education and qualifications
Have a clear job offer

What is our approach to EU citizens who lived here before Brexit?
They are welcome to stay, so we introduced the EU Settlement Scheme.
How will we attract entrepreneurs?
Start-up visas to allow entrepreneurs of the future who want to start up great businesses in this country.

Boost English language teaching to empower existing migrants.
