Environment and animal welfare Flashcards
What does the 2020 Budget mean for plastics?
A new plastic packaging tax to boost recycling. It will incentivise the use of recycled plastic and help to reduce the scourge of plastic waste. Set at a rate of £200 per tonne of plastic packaging that contains less than 30% recycled plastic.
What does the 2020 Budget mean for flooding?
Double the current investment in flood and coastal defences to £5.2 billion over 6 years. Better protecting 336,000 homes across the country. £120 million for the Environment Agency to repair assets damaged by recent floods.
What does the 2020 Budget mean for electric vehicles?
£500 million over 5 years to support the roll-out of a fast-charging network for electric vehicles. Drivers will never be more than 30 miles from a rapid charging station. A comprehensive review into electric vehicle charging infrastructure to monitor effectiveness.
What is our ambition for decarbonising the transport sector?
By 2050, 97% of cars and vans will be zero emission.
What is out approach to primates?
We are banning keeping primates a spets. Phasing out ownership and ensuring that any primates kept as pets will be safely rehoused.
What is out approach to cat microchipping?
Bringing forward a consultation to introduce the same safety measures for cats as already applied to dogs. Cat Protection: 8/10 stray cats aren’t microchipped.
What is out approach to live exports?
Ban it - it has taken 30 years to resolve because it is impossible to regulate against it while we’re within the EU Single Market.
What is our approach to trophy hunting?
We’re going to consult on restricting even further the importing and exporting of hunting trophies to and from the UK. We will bring about the toughest trophy-hunting rules in the world.
We will also be putting forward a ban on exotic furs and rugs. Many of these are the result of trophy-hunting, and a ban will further protect animal rights in the UK and across the world.
What is our approach to animal cruelty?
In July 2019 we introduced the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill to Parliament, which will mean animal abusers could face up to five years in prison. That’s a significant increase from the current maximum sentence of six months and will be one of the toughest punishments for animal abusers in Europe.
What is our new Nature for Climate fund?
A £640 million fund to increase tree planting in England. 30 million more trees - 30,000 hectares a year, or 46,000 football pitches. In line with recommendations from the Committee on Climate Change. It will also include urban tree planting.
What is our plan for Northumberland Forest?
£7 million to plant 1 million trees.
What is the Blue Planet Fund?
£500 million over 5 years from the DfID to export UK expertise in marine science around the world, supporting developing countries to support biodiversity and tackle climate change. It will also improve conditions for fishermen who rely on healthy oceans and plentiful fish stocks for their livelihoods. Use UK satellite technology to monitor marine environments and ensure that Marine Protected Areas are not subject to illegal fishing.
What is our approach to peatlands?
Restore them.
What did we do to the Climate Change Act?
Upgraded the 80% target to a 100% reduction by 2050.
What is our track record on greenhouse gases?
2010 - 600 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent
2018 - 449 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent
25% reduction.
