Agriculture, fisheries, and rural affairs Flashcards
What will we do about farmers’ payments?
We guarantee to match the current annual budget available to farmers for every year of the Parliament. This will ensure that farmers, growers and land managers have the time and security to adapt and prepare for life after the Common Agricultural Policy. In return for funding, they must farm in a way that protects and enhances our natural environment, as well as safeguarding high standards of animal welfare.
How will we ensure a smooth transition from the CAP?
A 7-year transition period that will eventually see the CAP eplaced.
How will reward farmers for good environmental stewardship?
An Environmental Land Management Scheme that pays farmers for air and water quality, measures to tackle climate change and its effects, soil health, animal welfare, public access to the countryside and action to reduce flood risks. The ELM scheme will be piloted and delivered during the transition period.
How will we support British farming?
Encourage everyone to ‘Buy British’.
What will we do with the annual quota for the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Scheme?
Increase it from 2,500 to 10,000.
What will we do about fisheries once we leave the EU?
Leave the Common Fisheries Policy and become an independent coastal state with control of our fishing waters.
What will we do about funding for fisheries?
Continue to support it throughout the Parliament.
How will we ensure fishing is sustainable?
A legal commitment to fish sustainability and a legal requirement for a plan to achieve maximum sustainability yield for each stock.
What will we give the police additional resources to tackle?
Rural crime.
How will we regenerate coastal towns?
Areas such as coastal towns which have historically been poorly served in terms of education and public services will benefit by cementing our Opportunity Areas programme to raise standards and support regeneration.
