Digital and technology Flashcards
How much are we spending on roll-out of gigabit broadband to rural areas?
£5 billion to support rolling it out to the hardest to reach 20% of the country (previous commitment was 10%). Gigabit-capable broadband is 40 times faster than standard superfast broadband, benefiting 5 million premises.
How much are we investing on the technology that underpins gigabit broadband?
£1 billion to
How much are we unlocking for competitive commercial investment in full fibre broadband?

What is Labour’s approach to broadband provision?
The CBI has already warned that investment would flee the country if Labour’s “toxic” plans to take broadband back under state control were put in place. Without private sector investment, there would be far less innovation in areas such as broadband, less tax revenue to fund government investment, and other serious knock-on effects.
What will be the impact of our efforts to roll out better mobile coverage?
Currently only 66 per cent of the UK landmass has geographic coverage for customers of all four network operators. This will rise to 95 per cent or more under our plan.
How will we improve mobile coverage in rural areas?
Shared Rural Networks - £1 billion agreement for new masts built and existing infrastructure shared between the main providers. It would eradicate not-spots and partial not-spots (some providers). This agreement would be the first of its kind around the world and would mean consumers will be able to connect to 4G coverage, wherever they live, travel or work - regardless of their network provider. This transformative fund will see additional coverage to 280,000 homes and businesses and 16,000km of roads. It will significantly improve life for the 9.3m people living in the countryside. Operators will pay for £530 million and we will pay the remaining £500 million.
How will we improve access to emergency services in rural areas?
Upgrade our emergency service network in the countryside to open it up for consumers, with no loss of capacity for the emergency services.
What will we have done by 2025?
Rolled out full fibre and gigabit-capable broadband to every home and business across the UK.
How much will the North of Tyne region receive from the third wave of the Local Full Fibre Networks challenge fund?
£22 million
