ideas of evolution Flashcards
catastrophism
the idea of catastrophes periodically destroying species living in a particular region (floods, disease etc.)
uniformitarianism
charles lyells theory; subtle processe that could happen over a long period of time and result in substantial changes
line of descent
Progression in series of fossils (from older to most recent) led to modern species. Species increased in complexity over time, until they reached a level of perfection
inheritance of acquired traits
the idea that acquired characteristics during an organisms lifetime can be passed onto offspring
survival of the fittest
the idea that organisms that are the fittest leave the most offspring
descent with modification
natural selection does not demonstrate progress, but results from a species’ ability to survive local conditions at a specific time
