Maximum spacing of fasteners for installing windows?
200 mm, OC (8”)
How are the peel and stick applied to the rough sill?
Corners are placed to hold a strip of starter paper and to help seal corners.
A layer of peel & stick is applied to the sill & 100 mm up the sides and 100 mm down the exterior over the start paper.
What is the minimum slope for a sill or head flashing?
6 degrees
What size bead or caulking should be used between the flange & wall?
3/8 Diameter
Why is the bottom of the window not fully caulked?
To allow for drainage
Why are nails bent over the top flange?
Allows for shrinkage, deflection of the lintel w/o stressing the window frame.
What is the advantage of leaving the old flanges in place when retrofitting a new window?
Not to disturb the weather barrier
How can you locate replacement hardware?
Window company or hardware supplier
What should you avoid when attaching hardware or sills?
Penetrating the sill & causing a leak
Where can you take damaged hardware or a window sash for expert advice?
Local window supplier or manuf.
Most windows have heel sizes:
1/2” smaller than RO, allowing 1/4 clearance on the sides and 1/2” head clearance to the lintel if the window is mounted flush to the RO
Head clearance is important why?
Lintels can deflect under load
Who should be consulted for window installation?
Building inspection dept. and warranty provider.
Window must be located in the RO with a equal gap on

if bottom of window requires shimming:
provide support under all vertical window members, check the sill is straight.
