Describe a nosing return:
The exposed end of the tread is shaped in the same way as the front nosing with molding placed under the tread.
Describe a filet:
Filet are shaped to fit between the balusters under the handrail & on top of the buttress cap
Describe a buttress cap (Shoe rail, base rail)
Shoe rail/ base rail - USed under the balusters, shaped to take the end of the balusters used in railing at landing or on top of the stringers.
Describe an angle newel:
Used at turns on a staircase.
Describe a finished opening:
The horizontal distance from the edge of the nosing at the upper landing to the edge of the finish at the other end of the stairwell.
What is the difference between a long L stair and a wide L stair?
Long L stairs have 2 or 3 treads at the bottom or the top at right angles to the treads.
When is a landing required in a stairway?
At 3.7 m intervals.
What is the difference between open stairs & closed stairs?
Open stairs - Have one or both sides open to a room
Closed stairs - Have both sides closed
What is the minimum landing depth for an L-Shaped interior stair serving a dwelling unit?
900 mm
What is molding?
Trim is used under the nosing to finish the stairs
What is the balustrade?
A complete unit of the newel posts, handrail, balusters and buttress cap
Balusters must be constructed so that they DON’T facilitate climbing, true or false?
True, they cannot facilitate climbing.
Materials used as handrails must be continuously graspable except where:
Interrupted by newels at changes in direction.
