I: UII CN III Flashcards
What type of nerve is CN III?
Motor; somatic and parasympathetic
Which two muscles are not supplied by CN III?
Superior oblique and lateral rectus
What does CN III innervate?
Extra ocular eye muscles except for two
What are oculomotor nuclei?
Somatic nuclei of origin
Where are the somatic nuclei of origin located?
In periaqueductal gray, anterior to cerebral aqueduct at level of superior colliculi
What part of the cerebral cortex sends axons to the oculomotor nuclei?
BMA #8
What other areas send fibers to the oculomotor nuclei?
Superior colliculi and medial longitudinal fasciculus
How do CN III axons travel?
Anterior through red nucleus, exit CNS via interpeduncular fossa (into cistern)
As the axon of CN III exits the CNS, what is it covered in?
Epineurium (continuos with dura mater)
Schwann cells cover every fiber
How does CN III nerves enter the skull?
Penetrates the dura, travels along cavernous sinus, exit skull via superior orbital fissure, enters eye socket
In the eye socket, what does CN III split into?
Superior and inferior rami
What muscles are supplied by the superior ramus of CN III?
Superior rectus
Levator palpebra superiorus
What muscles are supplied by the inferior ramus of CN III?
Medial rectus by medial branch
Inferior rectus by central branch
Inferior oblique by lateral branch
What does the accessory oculomotor nuclei contain?
Preganglionic parasympathetic neurons
How do axons from the accessory oculomotor nucleus travel?
Follow the oculomotor nerve and synapse in ciliary ganglion
