1: UIII CN V General Flashcards
What CN is the largest?
Trigeminal nerve
How is the trigeminal nerve classified?
Mixed nerve; more SENSORY fibers than motor
What is the nickname of the trigeminal nerve?
Great sensory nerve of the face
What three nuclei of termination are associated with the trigeminal nerve?
Main sensory nucleus
Spinal nucleus
Trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus
What is the one nucleus of origin associated with the trigeminal nerve?
Trigeminal motor nucleus (in PNS)
What is the one peripheral ganglion associated with the trigeminal nerve?
Trigeminal (semilunar) ganglion
What are the three peripheral branches of CN V?
Opthalamic
Maxillary
Mandibular
Where do the three peripheral branches branch out from?
Trigeminal ganglion
Where are the cell bodies of the main and spinal nuclei found?
In the trigeminal ganglion
Where do the peripheral processes (dendrites) come from (CN V)?
Face to trigeminal ganglion
How do the central processes of CN V travel?
From the trigeminal ganglion enter CNS to the main trigeminal nucleus or spinal nucleus
What information does the main trigeminal nucleus handle?
Touch, vibration, joint proprioception
What information does the spinal nucleus handle?
Pain and temperature
What cord pathway does CN V use?
Pain & Temp: lateral spinothalamic tract
Synapse: VPL of thalamus
1st order sensory
How do dendrites from CN V to the mesencephalic nucleus?
Dendrites from the periphery pass THROUGH the trigeminal ganglion, enter CNS, ascend to mesencephalic nucleus
NO SYNAPSES
