Q

Give an example of a simple reflex arc, eg. the hand-withdrawal response to heat:

A
  • Thermoreceptors in skin detect stimulus
  • Sensory neuron carries impulses to relay neuron
  • Relay neuron connects to the motor neuron
  • Motor neuron sends impulses to the effector (bicep muscles)
  • Muscle contracts to withdraw hand and stop it being damaged

16
Q

What is possible if there is a relay neuron involved in the simple reflex arc?

A

It is possible to override the reflex, eg. the brain could tell your hand to withstand the heat.

17
Q

Give 3 words to describe the nervous system communication:

A

Localised

Short-lived

Rapid

18
Q

Why is the nervous system considered localised?

A

Neurotransmitters secrete the impulses directly onto target cells.

19
Q

Why is the nervous system considered short-lived?

A

Neurotransmitters are quickly removed once they have done their job.

20
Q

Why is the nervous system considered rapid?

A

Electrical impulses travel very fast which allows animals to react quickly to stimuli.
