BM: ATP COPY Flashcards
How do plant and animal cells release energy from glucose?
Respiration.
Can a cell get its energy directly from glucose?
What does this mean?
No.
It means that in respiration the energy released from glucose is used to make ATP.
What does ATP stand for?
Adenosine triphosphate.
What is ATP known as?
Why?
A nucleotide derivative.
Because its a modified form of a nucleotide.
Describe and draw the structure of ATP:
- Adenine - nitrogen-containing organic base.
- Ribose - a pentose sugar that acts as a backbone.
- Phosphates - a chain of three phosphate groups.
What happens to ATP once it is made?
It diffuses into the part of the cell that needs energy.
What enzyme catalyses the hydrolysis of ATP?
ATP hydrolase.
How does ATP release energy?
Through hydrolysis reactions.
- Bonds between phosphate groups are unstable and so have low activation energy.
- When, broken they release lots of energy.
Write an equation to show the hydrolysis of ATP:
Why is it useful that ATP hydrolysis can be ‘coupled’ to other energy-requiring reactions?
Energy released can be used directly to make coupled reaction, rather than being lost as heat.
