G&E: Inheritance Flashcards
Gene
A sequence of bases on a DNA molecule that codes for a protein, which results in a characteristic.
Allele
A different version of a gene.
Genotype
The genetic constitution of an organism - the alleles an organism has.
Phenotype
The expression of the genetic constitution and its interaction with the environment - an organism’s characteristics.
Dominant
An allele whose characteristics appears in the phenotype even when there’s only one copy.
Shown with a capital letter.
Recessive
An allele whose characteristics only appears in the phenotype if two copies are present.
Shown by lower case letters.
Codominant
Alleles that are both expressed in the phenotype - neither one is recessive.
Locus
The fixed position of a gene on a chromosome.
Alleles of a gene are found at the same locus on each chromosome.
Homozygote
An organism that carries two copies of the same allele.
Heterozygote
An organism that carries two different alleles.
Carrier
A person carrying an allele which is not expressed in the phenotype but that can be passed on to offspring.
Are humans diploid or haploid organisms?
Diploid
How many alleles do gametes have?
One allele.
How can you predict the genotypes and phenotypes of the offspring produced if two parents are crossed?
Genetic diagrams.
Monohybrid inheritance
The inheritence of a characteristic controlled by a single gene.
