Stage 1 diagnostic values
Clinic from 140/90 - 159/99
AND
HBPM 135/85 - 149/94.
Stage 2 diagnostic values
Clinic from 160/100 – 180/120
AND
HBPM 150/95 or more
What to do if bp 180/120 or higher
If 180/120 or higher refer if:
- Signs of retinal haemorrhage +/- papilloedema.
- Life threatening sx e.g. new confusion, CP, signs of CCF, AKI.
If none of the above, look for target organ damage, and if present consider tx immediately without wating for ABMP
If hypertensive and under 40
Likely secondary so need to investigate

Check 5 yearly
What is HBPM/ABPM cut off for bp needing some form of intervention
135/85
Target bp for 80+ y/o
Clinic less than 150/90
Home less than 145/85
Target bp for less than age 80
Home less than 135/85
Clinic less than 140/90
