Hydrolysis Flashcards
1
Q
Hydrolysis definition
A
Reaction is one with OH- ions that breaks a chemical compound into two compounds using water.
2
Q
How would you compare rates of reaction in Hydrolysis?
A
-Add aqueous AgNO3 in ethanol
-Warm gently to specific temperature 30-70
-Add same amount of each haloalkane
-React and Monitor rate of precipitate formed
3
Q
During the hydrolysis of haloalkanes what is the trend down the group?
A
rate of hydrolysis decreases, therefore less time is taken
4
Q
Why is the bond for one haloalkane weaker than another?
A
The bond has a low bond enthalpy and is weak so needs less energy to break.
