Qualitative analysis Flashcards
What ions are tested?
Cl-
Br-
I-
NH4-
SO4 2-
CO3 2-
How do you test for a carbonate ion?
-Add a strong acid to your aqueous solution
-collect any gas and pass it through limewater
What are the observations if carbonate ions are present?
-Fizzing
-Gas turns into cloudy limewater
How do you test for sulphate ions?
-Add dilute HCl and barium chloride
What are the observations if sulphate ions are present?
-White precipitate of barium sulphate is produced
How do you test for a Halide ions?
-Add silver nitrate
-Add dilute NH3
-Add concentrated NH3
List the order of observations of each halide:
Cl-
Br-
I-
Cl-= White precipitate, dissolved, dissolved
Br-= Cream precipitate, doesn’t dissolve, dissolves
I-= Yellow precipitate, Doesn’t dissolve, doesn’t dissolve
How would you test for ammonium ions?
-Add sodium hydroxide to ammonium
-Warm gently
-Test with any gas involved with red litmus paper
What are the observations if ammonium ions are present?
-Ammonium gas will turn litmus paper blue
-Ammonium gas has a distinct smell
