Why do we eat?
A food is something that provides nutrients. Nutrients are substances that provide: energy for activity, growth, and all functions of the body such as breathing, digesting food, and keeping warm; materials for the growth and repair of the body, and for keeping the immune system healthy. Therefore we eat!!
What is the human body made up of?
Six elements. Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Calcium, Oxygen, and Phosphorus. The main ones are CHNO.
What are the main components of food?
Carbohydrates, Proteins, Fats, water, and also vitamins and minerals
What are proteins made up of?
Amino acids
What are fats made up of?
Fatty acids
Carbohydrates give us what?
Energy
Fats are good at what?
Being barriers in the body and energy stores.
What determines what someone eats for lunch?
Preferance, tradition, avaliability and convenience, positive and negative interactions, social interactions, emotions, values, body weight and image, and nutrition/health benefits.
Your diet should provide what?
Chemical energy for cellular processes, organic building blocks, and essential nutrients.
What percentage of your body is water?
60%
What percentage of fat does the typical body of a young women have?
23-31%
What percentage of fat does the typical body of a young man have?
13-21%
Is it better to eat the same thing all the time or mix things up?
It is better for your body to mix things up and eat different foods and you want to expose your digestive system to different foods.
What do we use proteins for?
Building, maintaining, and repairing the body, but is also used to make things like hormones, enzymes, and antibodies.

The median intake in NZ in 102g for males and 71g for females
