Human Nervous System Review and Meninges, Ventricles, and CSF Flashcards

1
Q

What defines the Central Nervous System (CNS)?

A
  • Encased in bones of the skull and vertebral column
  • Grossly consists of the brain (cerebrum, cerebellum, brainstem, and subcortical structures) and spinal cord
  • Control center, integration, and processing

Q

What defines the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)?

A
  • Spinal nerves - 31 pairs
  • Cranial nerves - 12 pairs
  • Carrying information to and from the CNS
  • And the autonomic nervous system (ANS)

13
Q

What do the sinuses do?

A

They all collect used blood and fluids to be drained out of the jugular vein and recycled

16
Q

What is the falx cerebri?

A

The dural septa between the right and left hemispheres

17
Q

What is the tentorium cerebelli?

A

The dural septa that separates the cerebellum from the cerebral hemispheres

18
Q

What does infratentorial mean?

A

Contains cerebellum and brainstem

19
Q

What does supratentorial mean?

A

Contains cerebrum

20
Q

What is the tentorial notch?

A

The opening where the brainstem passes into the cerebrum

21
Q

What often occurs at the tentorial notch?

A

Damage (when brain has a lot of movement) due to the thick and leathery texture of the notch

22
Q

Where is the arachnoid?

A

Lies on the inner surface of the dura

23
Q

What is the subarachnoid space?

A

The space below the arachnoid, but above the pia

24
Q

What is in the subarachnoid space?

A

CSF

25
Q

What are cisterns?

A

They are large pockets, enlargement of the subarachnoid space

26
Q

What are arachnoid trabeculae?

A

Collagenous strands connect the arachnoid and the pia for suspension

27
Q

Do all of the meninges also cover the spinal cord?

A

Yes

28
Q

Does the spinal dura only consist of a single layer?

A

Yes

29
Q

How does an epidural hematoma occur?

A

It occurs if the meningeal arteries are torn

30
Q

Characteristics of an epidural hematoma

A

Most frequently occurring after skull fractures
Bleeding between the periosteum (endosteal layer of the dura) and the skull bones
Death can occur within minutes of meningeal arteries being torn

31
Q

How does a subdural hematoma occur?

A

From dural venous sinus or vein attachment at the sinus (blood is beneath the dura)
