Human Nervous System Review and Meninges, Ventricles, and CSF Flashcards
What defines the Central Nervous System (CNS)?
- Encased in bones of the skull and vertebral column
- Grossly consists of the brain (cerebrum, cerebellum, brainstem, and subcortical structures) and spinal cord
- Control center, integration, and processing
What defines the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)?
- Spinal nerves - 31 pairs
- Cranial nerves - 12 pairs
- Carrying information to and from the CNS
- And the autonomic nervous system (ANS)
What is the purpose of the Insula?
- Involved in consciousness
- May be implicated in expressive aphasia
What is the purpose of the Limbic lobe?
Processes memory and emotion
Is the spinal cord in the CNS or PNS?
CNS
Are spinal nerves in the CNS or PNS?
PNS
What side of the spinal nerve carries motor (efferent) information?
Ventral side
What side of the spinal nerve carries sensory (afferent) information?
Dorsal side
What are the 3 layers of the meninges?
Dura mater, arachnoid, and pia mater
What are the two layers of the dura mater?
Meningeal layer and endosteal layer (closest to the bone)
Are there generally spaces on either side of the dura?
No
What are the spaces where the endosteal and meningeal layers of the dura separate called?
Venous sinus
What do the sinuses do?
They all collect used blood and fluids to be drained out of the jugular vein and recycled
What is the superior sagittal sinus?
The main sinus, dips into the longitudinal fissure
What is the dural septa?
Two-layer folds separating the cranium into compartments
