How Plants Use Glucose Flashcards
What are the 5 things plants use glucose for?
Respiration, making cell walls, making proteins, storing it in seeds, and stored as starch
When do plants and algal cells produce glucose?
During photosynthesis
How is glucose used for cell walls?
It is converted into cellulose for making strong cell walls
What does respiration in plants release?
Energy which enables them to convert glucose into other useful substances
How are proteins made in a plant?
By combining glucose with nitrate ions to make amino acids which are then made into proteins
How is glucose stored in seeds?
Glucose is turned into lipids (fats and oils) for storing in seeds
Why is glucose turned into starch?
Because starch is better for storing than glucose. Starch is used by the plant in winter when photosynthesis is not happening
