1.1 Animal and Plant Cells Flashcards
What are all living things made up of?
Cells
How do we see cells?
With a light microscope or an electron microscope
What are the five parts of an animal cell?
Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria and ribosomes
What does the nucleus do?
Controls the cell’s activities
What does the cytoplasm do?
It is where all the chemical reactions happen
What does the cell membrane do?
Controls which materials pass in and out of the cell
What does the mitochondria do?
This is where respiration happens (where energy is released during aerobic respiration)
What happens in the ribosomes?
Protein synthesis
What are the four parts of a plant cell that the plant cell has but the animal cell does not?
Cell wall, permanent vacuole and chloroplasts
What is the cell wall?
It is made of cellulose and provides support
What is the permanent vacuole?
It contains cell sap which is a weak solution of sugar and salts
What is the chloroplasts?
They contain chlorophyll which absorb light energy for photosynthesis
