3.5 Making Use of Enzymes Flashcards
What do some microorganisms produce?
Enzymes that pass out of their cells
What is bad about using enzymes in industry?
They are costly to produce
What do biological detergents contain?
Proteases and lipase that digest food stains
What is good about biological detergents?
They work at lower temperatures than ordinary washing powders. This saves energy and money spent on electricity
What are proteases used to do in industry?
Pre-digest babies food
What is isomerase used to do?
Convert glucose syrup to fructose syrup
Why is fructose syrup used?
It is used in slimming foods because fructose is sweeter so less of it is needed
What is carbohydrate used for?
To convert starch into sugar syrup in foods
What are enzymes used to do in industry?
Bring about reactions at normal temperatures and pressures
What do traditional chemical processes require?
Expensive equipment and lots of energy to produce high temperatures and pressures
