3.1 Proteins, Catalysts and Enzymes Flashcards
What are protein molecules?
Long chains of amino acids
What are amino acids folded in to?
Specific shapes
What does the shape or a protein depend on?
Its function
What are the four functions of proteins?
Structural components of tissue, hormones, antibodies and catalysts
What are chemical reactions in the body controlled by?
Enzymes
What are enzymes and what do they do?
They are biological catalysts and speed up chemical reactions
What are enzymes?
Large proteins
What is the area of an enzyme where another molecule can fit?
The active site
Where can a substrate in a reaction be held?
In the active site
What is done to the substrate?
It is either broken down or connected to another molecule
What three things can enzymes do?
Build large molecules from smaller ones, change one molecule in to another or break down large molecules into smaller ones
