4.3 The Effect of Exercise on the Body Flashcards
What do your muscles need when you exercise?
More energy so that they can contract, therefore an increased rate of respiration to increase the rate oxygen and glucose reach the muscle cells
What do you need to remove more quickly when you exercise?
Carbon dioxide
What happens when you exercise?
Your heart rate increases and the blood vessels supplying the muscles dilate allowing more blood containing oxygen and glucose to reach the muscles. Your depth and rate of breathing also increases
What does an increased breathing rate allow?
A greater uptake of oxygen and release of carbon dioxide in the lungs
How do muscles store glucose?
Glycogen
What is glycogen converted into?
Glucose for use during exercise
