4.3 Anaerobic Respiration Flashcards
What happens if you use muscles over a long period of time?
They will become fatigued and stop contacting efficiently
What happens when your muscles cannot get enough energy for aerobic respiration?
They begin to respire anaerobically
What is anaerobic respiration?
The incomplete breakdown of glucose and production of lactic acid
Which process releases more energy, anaerobic or aerobic respiration?
Aerobic
What is one cause of muscle fatigue?
Build up of lactic acid
How is lactic acid removed from the muscles?
By blood flowing through them
What is a waste product of anaerobic respiration?
Lactic acid
What happens to lactic acid when exercise has finished?
It must be completely broken down by a lot of oxygen
What is an oxygen debt?
The extra oxygen needed to break down the lactic acid
What does oxygen do to lactic acid?
Oxidises it into carbon dioxide and water
