3.3 Enzymes in Digestion Flashcards
Where do some enzymes work?
Outside body cells
What are digestive enzymes produced by?
Specialised cells in glands and in the lining of the stomach
What does digestion involve?
The breakdown of large insoluble molecules into smaller soluble ones
Where is amalayse (carbohydrase) produced?
In the salivary glands, pancreas and small intestine
What does amalayse do?
Catalyses the digestion of starch into sugars in the mouth and small intestine
Where is protease produced?
The stomach, small intestine and pancreas
What does protease do?
Catalysts the breakdown of proteins into amino acids in the stomach and small intestine
Where is lipase produced?
The pancreas and small intestine
What does lipase do?
Catalyses the breakdown of lipids (fats and oils) into fatty acids and glycerol
