Animal and Plant Cells Flashcards
What are all living things made up of?
Cells
What are the five parts of an animal cell?
Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria and ribosomes
What are the 8 parts of a plant cell?
Cell wall, permanent vacuole, chloroplasts, nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria and ribosomes
What is the nucleus?
A rounded structure which contains genetic material that controls the activities of the cell
What is the cytoplasm?
A gel like substance where most chemical reactions happen
What does the cytoplasm contain that controls chemical reactions?
Enzymes
What does the cell membrane do?
It holds the cell together and controls what goes in and out
What are mitochondria?
They are where most chemical reactions for respiration happen
What does respiration release that the cell needs to work?
Energy
What happens in ribosomes?
Proteins are made
What is the cell wall (plant cells only) made of?
Cellulose
What does the cell wall do? (plant cells only)
Supports and strengthens the cell
What is the permanent vacuole? (plant cells only)
It contains cell sap which is a weak solution of sugar and salts
What do chloroplasts contain and what do they do? (plant cells only)
They contain chlorophyll. This is where photosynthesis occurs.
What does photosynthesis do?
Makes food for the plant
