Hoseline Placement Flashcards
Old law tenement store fire
1st line - 2 1/2 line for large volume fires
2nd line - stretched to entrance hallway. When assured this line is not needed on fire floor, advance to floor above.
Old law tenement cellar fire
1st line is stretched to cellar entrance door inside building. Remain at this position to protect 1st flr. Do not advance down cellar stairs if there is an outside entrance to cellar.
2nd line should be advanced into cellar by front or rear entrance to cellar.
Old law tenement stairway fire
1st line - stretch up stair, operate to extinguish fire, shut down and advance. When possible, operate up wellhole.
2nd line - follow to finish extinguishment and protect members operating 1st line.
Top floor fire in old or new law tenement
If fire extends to cockloft, IC evaluates conditions and sends cockloft nozzle to top floor and protective hose line to the roof.
A charged line must also be in place to protect personnel and a trench cut, and also on the top floor before ceilings are pulled.
Air and light and dumbwaiter shaft fires
1st line - Should be stretched to nearest point from which water can be directed on the fire. Sufficient hose must be stretched to reach upper floors.
2nd line - May be necessary if fire extends into adjoining building.
Store fire in new law tenements
1st line - Into store to extinguish fire
2nd line - backs up the 1st line. If not needed on fire floor, advance to floor above. If two lines are needed in the store, a third line shall be stretched to floor above. A line must be stretched to protect fire escapes made untenable by smoke or fire.
Cellar fire new law tenement
1st line - stretched by way of the usually numerous exterior approaches to the seat of the fire.
Hi-rise fireproof multiple dwelling
1st Line - fire floor. Charged at apt door if ladder company has door control. Charged in stairwell if hallway is an IDLH.
2nd line - Charged at stairway door of fire floor depending on hallway conditions and size of fire area. May be used for hi-rise nozzle.
Duplex, triplex or sandwich apartments.
1st line - 2 1/2 via attack stairwell to fire apartment.
2nd line - 3rd and 4th engines must be readily available to stretch into adjoining apartment and into fire apartment by way of a breached wall.
Taxpayer cellar fire
1st line - Stretch first line into occupancy above the fire to prevent vertical extension. When there is an interior stair to the cellar, especially if it is an open stair, the first line must be stretched to this point to prevent the spread of fire and to permit operations on the first floor. When the line can advance down the cellar stairs it should do so.
2nd line - Backup the first line. Must be stretched to the top of the stairs to protect the members in the cellar and prevent the upward extension of the fire. May be used to:
- Control first floor if 1st line advances into cellar
- Serve as backup or protection line for 1st engine
- Stretch into cellar via interior stairs or outside entrance if first units line must control first floor
- Employ cellar pipes or distributors over fire
3rd engine ensures sprinkler is supplied
Taxpayer store and cockloft fires
1st two hand lines should be stretched to the store involved. Additional lines should be stretched to the adjoining stores. A line may be required on the roof to protect personal and exposures on e roof is opened.
Taxpayer store fire
1st line - stretch the first line into the involved store to protect life and extinguish the fire.
2nd line - backup the first line.
Taxpayer cockloft fire
1st line - stretch into the most seriously exposed occupancy/building, depending on life hazard and the location and severity of the fire. When exposures aren’t an immediate problem, then the first line should be stretched into the store under the main body of the fire and operated to extinguish the fire.
2nd line - stretch into another seriously exposed building/occupancy and operate into the cockloft to confine and extinguish the fire. It may be advisable to skip stores in order to confine a cockloft fire.
Private dwelling - building fully involved
When the first arriving engine backstretches to the hydrant, they should drop two handlines in front of the building.
Consider stretching a 2 1/2 for greater reach of stream, faster knock down, increased volume of Water and increased exposure protection. Also when encountering a wind impacted fire or heavily involved first floor in a larger style PD (Queen Anne)
Private dwelling - cellar fire
1st line - after size-up, stretched to the entrance door that provides the quickest access to the cellar. In detached or semi-attached PD’s, this is usually the side or rear entrance.
If this line cannot advance, it will maintain its position on the first floor (if safety allows) until the cellar fire is controlled.
2nd line - initially positioned and charged outside the fire building to back up the first hose line, it can be used to extinguish any fire that may extend to the floors above or be positioned as per the IC.
3rd line - whenever two hose lines are stretched and operating, a third line will be positioned and charged at the front of the building and operated as per the orders of the IC.
