Ovaries
Controls the development of the female secondary sexual characteristic and is involved in the menstrual cycle
Oestrogen
A female sex hormone
Site of production: ovaries (secretes it)
Effect: Stimulates LH and inhibits FSH
FSH - Follicle Stimulating Hormone
Site of production: Pituitary gland
Effect: causes egg to mature and stimulates the ovary to produce oestrogen
LH - Luteinising Hormone
Site of production: Pituitary gland
Effect: triggers ovulation/ stimulates the release of the egg
Progesterone
Female sex hormone
Site of production: empty follicle after ovulation
Effect: maintains the lining of the uterus and inhibits the release of both FSH and LH
