Digestive Sysytem (Rev2) Flashcards
How do you test for Lipids/fats
Using ethanol
How do you test for starch
Using iodine
How do you test for sugar
Using Benedict solution
How do you test for protein
Using biuret
How can the pH have a bad affect on the enzyme?
The pH can break down the bonds holding the enzyme together
What does the graph of the enzyme in a pH solution look like?
There is a sudden increase in gradient, then the graph peaks and fall at the same gradient as it rose.
What happens when you increase temperature?
Kinetic energy increases
If there is higher kinetic energy what will happen?
The enzymes and substrates collide more frequency.
What do you call the peak of a graph?
The optimum
What happens after the optimum is reached on a temperature-Enzyme efficiency graph?
The efficiency will decrease at a faster rate than it had increased before the optimum
Why does the efficiency decrease after the optimum?
Because it gets so hot that the active site chnages
What enzymes break carbohydrates?
Amylase
What breaks down protein?
Protease
What breaks down lipids?
Lipase
What is Bile?
Alkaline to neutralise hydrochloric acid from the stomach
