B15 - Adaptation, Interdependence And Competition Flashcards
Abiotic factors
Non-living elements of the environment
Habitat
An area where organisms live
Community
Group of interdependent living organisms in a community
Ecosystem
Interacting organisms and their environment
Distribution
Where particular types of organisms are found within an environment
Interdependence
When different populations rely on each other
Biotic factors
Interaction of living things
Distribution
Where particular types of organisms are found within an environment
What do animals compete for?
Territory, mate and food
What do plants compete for?
Water, minerals in soil, light
What are structural adaptations?
for example the shape or colour of the organism or part of the organism
What are behavioural adaptations?
for example migration to move to a better climate for the summer or winter, basking to absorb energy from the sun and warm up, and tool-using to obtain food
What are functional adaptations?
related to the process such as reproduction and metabolism, for example, delayed implantation of embryos or antifreeze in cells
