Homeostasis lesson 1 Flashcards
Give an example of what homeostasis maintains.
constant supply of O2 and glucose
constant body temperature
optimal levels of CO2, H2O and salt
For homeostasis to work
1) sense changes in the external environment
2) Respond appropriately to maintain an internal balance.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the nervous system
Advantage:
Very quick reaction
Disadvantage:
-Can’t keep up a persistent command (not good for sustained stimuli
-Not connected to all cells
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the endocrine system
Advantage:
-Hormones can go everywhere
-can set up persistent response
DIsatvantage:
-Slower reaction.
What are the subtopics for the feedback loop
Feedback
Response
Effector
Integrator
Receptor
Stimulus.
What is negative feedback
Reduces effects of the stimulus
What is positive feedback
Works to increase the effects of the stimulus/change.
List the subtopics of feedback loop
-Stimulus (stress/change)
-Receptor (detects stimulus)
-Integrator (Control centre)
-Effector (Alters condition)
-Response (weaken stimulus)
-Feedback
