1.7 Lipids Flashcards
What is the structure of Glycerol
-alcohol
-3 carbon chain
-3 OH groups
What is the structure of Fatty acids
-hydrocarbon tail (3-50 carbons long)
-1 carboxyl group
Saturated fatty acids
-Have a maximum number of H atoms
-More energy because more C-H bonds
-Found in animal fat
-solid at room temperature
Unsaturated fatty acids
-Dont have maxiumum number of H atoms -Found in Plants
-Liquid at room temperature (oils)
-
Why do unsaturated fatty acids not have maximum number of H atoms
Due to double bonds C=C
Why are unsaturated fatty acids liquid at room temperature
Because they bend a double bond, so they can be tightly packed.
Polyunsaturated fat
- have more than one double bond
Glycerol + 1 fatty acid produce?
monoglyceride + water
Glycerol + 2 fatty acid produce?
Diglyceride + 2 water
Glycerol + 2 fatty acids and 1 phosphate produce?
phosphoglycerides + 3 water
