Homeostasis: The brain Flashcards
Neurons need companion cells. What are they called and what is their function?
Neuroglial cells help feed and maintain neurons and there are around 5-10 glial cells/neuron.
What is the proper definition of a nerve
A bundle of neurons bound together by a connective tissue.
What is the myelin Sheath
Cell mb made up of mostly lipids, they are formed by schwann cells (type of glial cells) and act as an insulator meaning they wont let ions flow through the membrance.
Why is myelin sheath important for signal transmission
1) they act as an insulator
2) signals are transmitted faster.
What are meylinated fibers
They are axon wrapped with shwann cells called WHITE MATTER.
It allws for faster imulse transmission
What are non-myelinated fibres
Axons with no schwann cells also called GREY MATTER (becuase no sheaths)
mostly found in the brain (close together)
What are sensory neurons
sensory organs—brain—
Afferent neurons meaning they carry information from sensory receptors found all over the body towards the CNS.
They are usually myelinated
What are motor neurons
Brain–body–mucles, glands
Efferent neurons meaning they carry motor information away from the central body to the muscles and glands in order to initiate action.
They are usualy myelinated
What are interneurons
mostly neurons in the brain, they are a mix between motor and sensory neurons.
They are non-myelianted in thebrain
highly branched dendrities
and short axons
