Homeostasis and response - Homeostasis Flashcards
what is homeostasis
maintaining a stable environment in a cell or organism in response to internal and external changes
why is homeostasis important
because cells need the right conditions in order to function properly, and we need the right conditions for enzymes to work
what do receptors do
detect a stimuli and sends electrical impulses down neurones to the CNS
what is a stimuli
a change in environment
what does the coordination centre do
recieves and processes information from receptors, then organises a response
what do effectors do
- mostly muscles and glands, they carry out a response that counteract the change and restores an optimum level
when does negative feedback occur
Negative feedback occurs when a change in a. variable triggers a response.
examples of things which need to be controlled in the human body
- blood glucose concentration
- water levels
- body temperature
examples of coordination centre
brain, spinal cord, pancreas
what does the automatic control systems in the human body consist of
the nervous system or hormones
