What is meant by a holistic approach ?
A holistic approach takes into account a persons wider needs (physical , intellectual , emotional , social ,cultural and spiritual ) and seek to meet these needs to promote health and wellbeing
What are benefits of holistic approaches ?
-care is more personalised
-other issues which contribute to the individuals ill health , such as stress or poor housing may be identified and addressed
-being viewed as a whole person and not a medical problem can improve an individuals general health and wellbeing
What are disadvantages of holistic approaches ?
-most people only want their particular illness or symptom treated
-generally , doctors do not look for other issues during diagnosis
-health and social care workers are not employed or skilled to manage all aspects of an individuals needs
What does advocacy allow service users to do ?
-express their views and concerns so that they are taken seriously
-access information and services
-defined and promote their rights and responsibilities
-explore choices and options
