History - The Voyages of discovery (II) Flashcards
Why did the voyages take place
Firstly, in the 15th century, a change was taking place in Europe. During that time, the nobles did not need their strong, cold castles to protect them. Thus, they started to wish for more comforrtable homes and a better life. They wanted more fine silk, cotton clothes, spices, jewellery, perfumes and carpets. They also wanted these things to be cheaper so that they could obtain them easily. This is why the voyages took place.
Write about the famous explorer Bartholomew Diaz
He was a Portuguese sailor who sailed south in 1487, keeping close to the coast of Africa. Every day he thought the ship would fall over the edge of the world. This is because in those days, they did not know that the world was actually round. Finally, he saw that he was sailing northwards again, and knew he sailed around the ‘bottom’ of africa. He thought he could sail to India but his men made him go back to Portugal
Write about the famous explorer Vasco da Gama
(1498) He was another Prtugese sailor who sailed around the south of Africa. Unlike, Diaz, however, he kept going northwards. after a few weeks, he met some Arab sailors who had come from India. They showed him the way to India.
Write about Christopher Columbus
He was an Italian sailor who sailed in a Spanish ship and set out to reach India by sailing to the west. He believed the world was a ball, and did not know that America was between europe and asia. He reached an island after 3 months which he thought was near India. However, he never knew that he had found a new continent and the island is now known as the West Indies. (1492)
