BST 1.7 Global Warming Flashcards

1
Q

What is global warming

A

It is the phenomenon of gradual increase in the average temperature of the Earth. It is caused by the release of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane, CFCs, etc. into the atmosphere

Q

Describe CFCs

A

CFC stands for chlorofluorocarbons. The ozone layer is made out of protective gases and it is responsible for protecting the surface of the earth from the sun’s harmful radiations. CFCs destroy the ozone layer of the atmosphere. This makes the way for the ultraviolet rays to reach the earth, thus, increasing the temperature which leads to global warming.

Q

What is the impact of global warming on bangladesh

A

Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries to suffer the disastrous effects of climate change due to its location in the Ganges delta and the fact that majority of the land area is low lying in nature. As we know, in global warming, the sea level rises - causing floods, which is why we face an immediate effect. Most of the natural hazards (floods, cyclones and droughts) faced by this region have a direct link to global warming.
Rise in average temperatures in the summer, unpredictable rainfall patterns, increase in rainfall, dry winter seasons HAVE A DIRECT IMPACT ON AGRICULTURAL PRACTISES AND CROP PRODUCTION. Thus, the economy and agriculture is at risk due to global warming. There is famine as there is a large population to feed.

Q

What are the causes and effects of global warming

A

SOME OF THE MAIN CAUSES
- the burning of fossil fuels
- deforestation
- increased use of air coolers and refrigerators (emitting CFCs into the atmosphere)
- increased use of vehicles (emitting carbon dioxide into the air and harmful agricultural practises)

EFFECTS
These activities cause the temperature of the Earth to increase which in turn causes the glaciers to melt. High temperature leads to climate change. These weather patterns change, causing the dry areas to get drier and wet areas to get wetter. This increases the frequency of disasters (such as floods, droughts, etc.) Loss of natural habitats for animals is another significant effect as animals are forced to migrate and adapt.
