HISTORY - DIARY ON THE LIFE OF A VOYAGER Flashcards
January 3rd, 1532
My name is Anastasia Vienna Fernandez. I am the captain of my ship. Today marks the start of our voyage. Our crew is unsure how long it will take, but we are certain that we will come across many obstacles and challenges. Despite that, we will not give up. Our ship is rather small, but we are planning to fit around 200 men as well as some food rations, necessities and sleeping arrangements. these will hopefully make our journey a bit more bearable.

We have been travelling for many weeks, nearly a month. We have experienced many extremes of weather - scorching heat, heavy rain, dangerous crashing waves, and even a tornado. Most of our food rations are beginning to wane, and we are starting to starve. I am quite worried, yet I am determined to hopefully reach land.

Finally, today a miracle took place. We saw an island nearby and steered towards it. We found palm trees consisting of many strange round fruits I have never seen before. They had a prickly, brown shell -like cover. We plucked those fruits from the trees, and when we cracked the shell open, a refreshing liquid poured out of them. We were very relieved to see this, as we were parched and by drinking the liquid, we were able to quench our thirst.

We have been here for a few days, exploring. My crew and I have noticed that it is an enormous island, indeed. Yesterday, we found a tribe of people on this island. They were quite harmless and accepted us as guests. They lived in small huts made of whatever they could gather - hay, stones, rocks, sand, etc. The tribe wore clothes like tunics, robes, cloth tied around their waists, etc. They spoke a strange, foreign language and we managed to communicate with them using gestures and signs with our hands.

Over the time that we have been staying here so far, the tribe has showed us some interesting things. We have noticed that they are quite advanced, intelligent people. They have a kind of writing consisting of symbols, which they taught to us. They had also explained to us, that the round brown fruits that we saw earlier, were actually coconuts. They told us how they brought water from the nearby freshwater water bodies, and purified the waThey explained to us that if we drank unfiltered water we would become sick. The tribe also had connections of trading with the other islands, by travelling along the sea with their handmade yet durable boats. Thus, they could also spread their ideas.
To conclude, we were successful in our voyage as we have safely reached a new land and have also learnt and seen many things.
