Q

Compare and contrast the art of the Renaissance Artists and the Middle Ages

A

(Studying Bodies)
The first difference between them is that the Renaissance artists would study bodies to improve their art. They would cut up bodies to see where the muscles and bones were. For example, the very detailed statue of Mary holding Jesus after he was killed (by Michelangelo). However, in the Middle Ages the Church wouldn’t let them do this. Studying the bodies helped artists draw people and animals in much better, lifelike ways.

(Studying Nature)
Secondly, the artists in the Renaissance would study nature to make their paintings seem more real. They would go out and make careful drawings of flowers, trees, rocks and water. An example is the painting titled “The Large Tuft of Grass” by the German artist DÜrer. On the other hand, the artists of the Middle Ages would usually paint what they remembered. So, many of their paintings were not very lifelike.

(Perspective)
The third difference was that artists in the Middle Ages did not know how to draw things in the distance. Often they painted figures against a flat surface whereas the Renaissance artists found out how to make things in their drawings look near/far away. For example, the painting Ägony in the Garden (by an italian artist - Mantegna) is one of the earliest pictures with a good perspective.

(Real people)
Lastly, the drawings in the Middle Ages were different compared to the Renaissance because most of their drawings were about religion. Their figures were stiff and did not have any expression. The Renaissance artists painted people with real expressions and their topics of art were more diverse.
